A career is not a sprint. It is a long game.

A career is not a sprint. It is a long game.

When I first started doing coaching, my first client paid me RM50 a session.

Eventhough it was a very small amount, I took it. And until today, I am so grateful for that first client who gave me a chance.

I knew where I was headed and I knew that every session, even only at RM50, was bringing me closer to the person I was building myself to be.

In my work, I have seen talented people make the same kind of bet on themselves. Taking a salary cut to move into a new role because they saw something in that path that mattered more to them than the number on their payslip that month.

On the surface it looks like a step back, but if you know where you are going, you understand that some short term sacrifices are not losses.

Those are investments.

This is something I talk about in coaching too. When you are clear on your direction, you develop a different relationship with setbacks and trade-offs.

You stop needing every single move to be an upgrade and become willing to lose a battle because you are playing for the war.

The people I have seen grow the fastest in their careers are almost never the ones only looking at their payslip.

They are the ones who made a decision about who they wanted to become, and then did whatever it took to get there, even when it was uncomfortable.

Clarity of direction gives you the patience to play the long game. And the long game is the only one worth playing.

Cheers!
